Answer Engine Optimization

From "Citation Zero" to category authority: the AEO playbook

How I turned answer-engine optimization into a repeatable, per-product system.

Headline result

0% → 45–57%

From Citation Zero to a 45–57% mention rate across six major AI engines at the 46-day readout, plus the #2 most-cited domain in the category (758 citations, 15.3% share)

Challenge

We had a "Citation Zero" problem. Across eight AI-generated questions in the Managed File Transfer category, our brand showed up in exactly zero answers. This was not a product-quality problem, it was a content-architecture and buyer-justification problem: the product page read like a product description, not a category authority hub, so the AI engines had nothing clean to retrieve, trust, or cite.

My role

I owned this end to end, strategy, execution, and measurement. I built the playbook, ran the Managed File Transfer launch myself, proved it worked, then productized it into a repeatable system now used across seven products.

Approach

Five levers, in order:

  1. 01Consistent entity signals. Standardize naming and description across the product's entire footprint, schema, copy, and messaging docs, so the engines see a machine-verifiable consensus about what the product is.
  2. 02Chunk-first content. Restructure pages for passage-level retrieval: answer-first, self-contained sentences an engine can lift cleanly into a generated answer.
  3. 03Fan-out coverage. Build hub, pillar, and support pages mapped to how AI fans one question into 8 to 15 sub-queries, so we show up across the whole cluster, not a single keyword.
  4. 04Technical visibility, the unlock layer. Restore AI-crawler access, HTML readability, schema, and crawl health, because without it none of the content work counts.
  5. 05Citation-worthy refresh. Add the evidence AI actually cites, compliance standards, benchmarks, expert attribution, and freshness, to move a page from indexed-but-ignored to retrieved-and-cited.

Running underneath all five is an always-on measurement layer that tracks mention rate, citation share, and rank against competitors across six AI engines.

What it proves

I do not run one-off SEO wins. I diagnose the real problem, build a repeatable system to fix it, and prove the results, taking a product from a documented zero to category authority.
